Commercial & Research Solutions
-
Aquaculture Products
We produce high quality seed for sustainable seafood growers (seaweed and bivalves - oysters, mussels and more!) and are one of the first companies to offer local California varieties.
-
Research Collaborations
We have a successful track record in aquaculture research, from grant writing, navigating the permitting process, executing and managing projects, publishing, and implementing tech-to-market strategies. Holdfast can also offer space and technical assistance at our hatchery located in San Pedro, CA. We welcome ideas for both applied and basic aquaculture research topics.
-
Education and Outreach
Our team believes that education and outreach are critical components to support a growing sustainable aquaculture industry. With a combined experience of over 10 years in education and outreach, we provide presentations and hands-on experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages at no cost.
-
Coastal Bioremediation
An individual mussel or oyster has the capacity to filter 10 liters of seawater per hour - more than 50 gallons per day! This provides an efficient biological system to remove nitrogen and particulate waste from the ocean. We support and provide resources for bio-remediation practices that utilize shellfish.
-
Conservation and Restoration
We support conservation and restoration efforts of native marine shellfish. These organisms provide a vital habitat and food source for many other species in the marine environment.
-
Workforce Training
An aquaculture industry requires an education pipeline to train the next generation of aqua-farmers. We offer apprenticeship and internship programs that provide hands-on technical training, introductions to the biology and ecology of aquaculture species, and exposure to the policy and business aspects of the industry.
-
Equitable Access to Seafood
We believe that delicious protein-rich seafoods should be accessible and affordable to all people. We welcome partners and projects that support the development of local community supported aquaculture systems.
-
Connecting Sound Science to Industry
There is an incredible wealth of information generated through academic research that can have impactful consequences on aquaculture practices, and there are industry needs that should drive academic research and partnerships. We provide consultation and research services to connect industry partners with sound science. We also conduct in-house research to develop superior lines of important aquaculture species.
